Hi, this is Carks. I am excited for January 19th because that’s when I get home and everyone’s going to be happy. I’m happy to get home too because I get to see my cat, and I miss her.

On New Years’ Eve me and my sister got these headbands, they’re not just headbands, they have bunny ears or horns or Angry Bird heads sticking up, and there’s a heart-shaped switch in the top and when you switch it on they light up. It’s very cool, well, says my mom. We saw these headbands on lots of other kids on the street, and we bought them from people selling them on the street. That’s all about the headbands.

I have something that you guys probably can’t do: I can bounce a broomstick on my foot. You guys can try to practice it between now and when I get home, and see if you can do it, too.

Me and my sister have school for four hours every day this week, which makes me happy because it’s shorter than school in Ohio. It’s Spanish school, we learn verbs, we play games sometimes like Bananagrams, and today we went shopping at the fire station. That’s where they sell second-hand things for traje – the traditional clothes people wear around here – on Tuesdays and Fridays in the driveway.

When we get to school we get to have a cup of coffee with sugar with our teachers, and another cup of coffee when we get a break halfway, but the second cup is only a half cup. At break time we also have sweet bread.

Today when we got to school we did some Spanish learning, and then while Anna worked I drew a picture. Later on at nine we got a huge piece of paper for a test tomorrow but I forgot my test at school. Later after the snack, which was chuchitos and melon, we got pieces of bamboo and made kites I think the word is barrileta or maybe papalote. We got the bamboo from bamboo trees around the school, some glue, and tissue paper and string. We took pictures but we can’t put up pictures on my blog yet but we will when we get back to Panajachel. When I was done making my kite it turned out to be a dragon. After school was over I flew my dragon kite.

After lunch my dad and I went down to the lake to kayak. I got a double-sided paddle this time, not a canoe paddle. Dad had the same boat as yesterday and he had a canoe paddle that is harder to use with a kayak. We paddled around the lake, which is from a volcano that blew itself up so whenever we get in the water we are inside the volcano’s crater, and sometimes we see floating rocks that are from the old volcano that blew itself up.

After a while we met some of our friends from swimming yesterday, boys with the names Will and Peter. They are Maya boys so they speak Maya, but they also speak Spanish and even a little English. Will wanted to get in the water but he wasn’t sure if he wanted to get in, so he pushed me in for fun and then he came in. We got the boat that I rode in out into the water and we paddled all the way to a not too deep area and then we played a game to see who could stay standing up on the boat the longest without tipping over. Then we put the boat upside down and I pretended to surf but it didn’t work out that well because Will and Peter were trying to get up on the boat and it tipped and I fell in to the lago (that’s Spanish for lake). When we were all done in the water we pulled the boat back up to shore and dried off and said see you guys tomorrow. My dad thought we should invite them over to our house or they should invite us over to their house.

We started Spanish school by playing hangman in English and Spanish. We did that for an hour and then we went to go riding horses.

We went to the horse pasture to get our horses, in Spanish they are called caballos. Mine was the grey horse, Anna’s was the brown horse with the tan mane. Jose’s was like hers but a black mane. The horse pasture is near the school and we walk right through it on our way to school. The horses are in a straight line in the shade under a roof and some tied on a post in the grass. We made whistles with the grass in our hands, some are loud and some not so loud and it depended on how big the hole in the blade of grass was, and I learned how to make the same sound with just my thumbs with different size spaces between my thumbs. Bigger spaces between my thumbs are louder.

The man who keeps the horses went with us too. We rode all around town on the street with tuk-tuks and everything, and the horses weren’t afraid of the tuk-tuk but one of the tuk-tuks drove over on the sidewalk because the driver was afraid of the horses. When there was a tuk-tuk that didn’t see us, my horse turned around in circles. We went down to the lake and our horses took a drink and I thought I would fall off because my horse was bending his head down so much.

When we got back from horseback riding we played hide-and-seek with Jose in Spanish mostly.

At 6:30 a.m. my sister woke up and went to our parents’ room to not disturb me. After awhile she couldn’t resist to wake me. So she carefully unhitched the door and carefully came in without making any noise then she came around the bed and jumped on me!

Later on we went down for breakfast, we had eggs, tortillas, refried black beans, and queso fresco which is fresh white cheese, and corn tea. We went upstairs and got ready for our Spanish school. The man who walked us up yesterday to our host family’s house came and walked us to the school. There was one school for the kids, and one school for each adult. The schools were made out of bamboo and the roof was made out of metal. Our teacher spoke a little English and a lot of Spanish, his name was Jose. The fun thing about our teacher is that we barely had to do any work, we could just play games like hangman in Spanish and tried to get a ball into a hat. We took a little snack break, there was watermelon and chuchitos, which are like tamales but wrapped in corn leaves, and we had agua pura to drink which is water that you can drink without getting sick.

We made orgami frogs, big ones and small ones, and then we played a game with them, we tried to jump them into my hat.

We learned a bunch of questions like where things are (like on top or under), and How are you? Tomorrow I bet it will be the same except we won’t make orgami things because that was our first day of school and the next days will be more work.
